Shelf upgrades for 2026
So the landy has had a 18mm plywood shelf mounted up high for the last 2 years (pic 3&4 show it next to the new one), it was a proof of concept (POC) about making packing easier.
Well, the POC worked… the storage was so handy and easy to use I added a rail to hold the UAO tyre table to it.
After 2 years tho, 8.5kg of additional weight up high wasn’t sitting well with me. That and wood being easy to break when off-road I decided to upgrade.
So - I bought a sheet of Aluminium and looked at the best way to add strength to it. chatGPT came out on top with Dimple dies and a 90° angle across the front and rear edges. Meaning the shelf could in theory hold 120kg whilst only weighing 4kg.
So here is the process-
1 mark out 135 holes in a staggered pattern on the Ali
2 make sure to leave space for the UAO rails
3 drill said holes with a 25.5mm hole saw (this bit takes ages!)
4 use a simple screw tight Dimple die from @stakesys to set each hole into a dimple adding 80% of the strength to the sheet
5 add the rails front and rear - make sure to use plenty of rivets
6 paint as required, I left the top clean as scraping kit on and off would just kill any powder coat or paint.
7 fit to the truck, take some appalling pictures and call it a day!
Honestly I’m expecting a few rattles till I can get some CT1 under it to stop it from squeaking etc.
I couldn’t get an off the shelf version of this as the mounting in the wolf is to the roll cage. Which is an odd width (1367mm) and I like honing skills so made this myself.
Next will be the mid level shelf I have the @ankersolix_uk c800PLUS mounted removing another 4kg of weight from there as well.
Then the drawers will be converted to Ali as well.
2026 is the year of upgrades!
